Exclusive Premiere by The Girlfriend Letter 8.2.17

There’s something powerful about women who show up to life willing to put one foot in front of the other in pursuit of their dreams despite the voices in and outside of their heads telling them they are crazy, undeserving and that their dreams are absurd. To me, these women are “Girls Like Me.” Their lives may be messy; their dreams may be lofty; they may look ordinary from the outside, but their stories are extraordinary.  They are powerful, tender and have tales worth sharing.

Mark Addison and I wrote this song for these ladies. We invited our friends and fans to sing along and share the personal mantras that keep their dreams alive dreams, despite life’s curve balls.

“Girls Like Me” is a song with many stories. In this video, fans from around the world of all ages, races, shapes and sizes sing together, weaving a story of defying stereotypes, embracing the beauty and power of who they are.

Fans of both Lucinda Williams and Motown soul will find much to like in Colonna; the Louisiana-born troubadour brings a decidedly fresh spin on twangy Americana. “Girls Like Me” is an upbeat anthem written for the women who don’t quite fit the mold.  –The Boot

LYRICS:

I looked in the mirror; there was one grey hair
I wondered who could have put it there
Was it God, was it mom, was it dad was it me?
Then I asked myself who I wanted to be

Mmmmmmm Mmmmm

Got in the car put the radio on
Can’t get away from Celine Dion
Songs about love that I’ll never play
The light turned green, now I’m on my way

Mmmmmmm Mmmmmm

‘Cause girls like me, we don’t get enough
We don’t get to see that side of love
Girls like me we don’t fit in

‘Cause girls like me, we got original sin

I fell in love at a tender time
She was seventeen; I could have made her mine
Down the road, I fell in love again
He was thirty-two; I was twenty-nine

Mmmmmmm Mmmmm

Girls like me, we don’t get enough
We don’t get to see that side of love
Girls like me we don’t fit in
‘Cause girls like me, we got original sin

Nobody told me how it should be
I’ve never seen the other side of free
Threw my coins in the wishing well
You came along and broke the spell
Broke the spell, Broke the Spell

I dream asleep now I dream awake
I pray the lord my soul to take
The stars at night shine down on me
Remind me who I want to be

Mmmmmmm Mmmmm

A mother, a lover, a brother and a friend
A sister with a heart that’s on the mend
A slave to the magic a wish in the wind
Around and around and around again

‘Cause girls like me, we don’t get enough
We don’t get to see that side of love
Girls like me we don’t fit in
‘Cause girls like me, we got original sin
‘Cause girls like me we don’t get enough
We don’t get to see that side of love
Girls like me we don’t fit in
‘Cause girls like me, we got original original original original original sin
